My experience with Hypnobabies

If you asked me a year ago, what I thought about labor and delivery, I would have said, “it’s super painful and I’m definitely getting an epidural!” And if you told me that I could have a painless, calm, joyful birthing time without ANY medication, I would reply, “you are absolutely NUTS.”

The funny thing is that I just happened to fall into this natural birthing track by accident. Somehow I was introduced to hypnobabies, and now I feel it was the single, most important decision I made in my life. I speak the truth! Before I really did my research on birthing, I never thought twice about getting an epidural. I mean, that’s just what all normal, sane women do right? You take tylenol for headaches, neosporin for cuts, and an epidural for birthing!

I can go on about why epidurals are not the best decision if you don’t need one…but I’ll tell you about my mom’s experience. So my brother was born in 1992 and my mom had an epidural with him. Shortly after he was born, my mom noticed his left arm wasn’t moving. She asked the doctor why his arm wasn’t moving, and he replied, “oh, that’s the epidural. Don’t worry. It’ll wear off.” So obviously anything that enters the bloodstream of the mother will go to the baby. Some other known side effects are the possibility for a poor baby latch, the inhibition of beta-endorphin production,  reduction of oxytocin production or a halt in it rising during labor, excruciating post partum back pain, and so much more!  This article has a longer in-depth explanation of why epidurals can have many unintended consequences. Do your research before you get an epidural!

Well, here’s my review of Hypnobabies and what my experience was like. If you could have an empowering, peaceful, painless birthing, would you do it? I would! I did, and I will again if I’m blessed with another baby!
